Abstract

The Umayyads of al-Andalus were able to establish a refined administrative system by laying its foundations and defining relations between the various religious, political and economic administrative positions. The Umayyad influence is evident in the administrative practices of the political entities that succeeded them. The amir was the head of the administrative structure and its main axis. Around him revolved the important administrative and political offices. The chamberlain played the principal role in connecting the amir to the administrators in the Umayyad period. No administrative officer could take an important decision without recourse to him. For this reason the Umayyads took great care in the selection of their chamberlains and they entrusted them with the most important tasks and removed them from office when they failed.
